Hanna Review:
Cert(uk): 12A
Runtime: 111 minutes
Directors: Joe Wright
Main cast: Cate Blanchett, Eric Bana, Jason Flemyng, Jessica Barden, Michelle Dockery, Olivia Williams, Saoirse Ronan, Tom Hollander
Actors: Saorise Ronan plays a 16year old assassin, her portrayal of the tough soldier type was played well, showing she can still be in hand to hand combat, as well as make the audience empathise with her lack of experience with the outer modern world. Eric Bana who plays a fatherly role to Hanna, comes across well on screen, and shows his characteristics of protecting her as well as letting her go free, the contrast between them both are played in subtle way, not over the top. Cate Blanchett plays her character very well, and gently unfolds her personality as the plot thickens, her spiteful ways make you really hate her just what the film needed to feel in the long parts.
Plot: Hanna is a teenage girl, who escaped from her previous life when she was a baby with her father Erik an ex-CIA member. Erik brings her up to portray all the traits of a soldier, stamina, smarts, as well as her own need for survival, in order to one day be ready to kill the woman who killed her mother- so then Hanna can be free, without need to hide.
When Hanna feels ready she alerts the CIA of her movement, this then starts the movie into a fast pasted sequence all this within the first 20 minutes or so, sometimes it became hard to follow why this was happening and who everybody was at this point, although the movie does unfold gradually. Her escape from the CIA then slows down feeling as if the tension and climax had just reached its peak. Hanna’s Journey seems almost pointless at this point and leaves you feeling that the best has already been watched, and this is probably true as the slow progression is almost tiresome. Although as it nears the end of the film she is near to her target, but Hanna is left with revelations about how she functions and questions her humanity.
Rating: 2 out of 10
I personally didn’t like this movie, it felt disjointed in a way. The fight scenes where choreographed well and looked believable although soon became monotonous and all tension was lost. I also did not like the pace the movie was set in very much the beginning seemed to rushed and felt as if the best and most heart pumping moment had already been seen, and the later parts felt monotonous slow and became tiresome easily. I would not say this is a calming movie it is one that you would have to have patience to get through. I would say this appeals to people who like fight sequences, woman would most likely be suited to this film due to its female roles who seem very headstrong and powerful.

Arthur Review:
Cert(uk): 12A
Runtime:110 minutes
Directors: Jason Winer
Main cast: Anya Bergstedt Jordanova, Christina Calph, Dame Helen Mirren, Geraldine James, Greta Gerwig, Jennifer Garner, Leslie Hendrix, Luis Guzman, Nick Nolte, Russell Brand
Background: A new take on the 1981 hit film, with Dudley Moor playing a loveable millionaire who’s life is took over by his love for novelty material goods Manhattan has to offer, although finds him self in danger of ruining his cushioned lifestyle by falling in love, with a penniless woman who his family frown down upon.
Actors: You only have to see a few moments of this movie to see Moors interpretation of the character completely differs to how Russel brand portrays his privileged character in a loopy, uncontrollable, hyper active way. Brand plays the characters quirks and weaknesses well, although his humour is not put across as well as it could be, e.g. he loses his British dry humour that many may not understand. Greta Gerwig who plays Brands love interest seems to understate her nice girl role, and seems believable in showing her normal personality and moral high ground over anything else, this is a contrast and brings the film back to a universal level. Jennifer Garner plays her role well and gets people laughing with her manic ways, although underlines everything she does with a sinister twist. Dame Helen Mirren plays Hobson well, and shows a stern although motherly role, and uses her likeability and professionalism to a “T”, she plays a heart wrenching account and truly makes you empathise.
Plott: Arthur is a rich and indulgent man brought up by his love of money and lack of responsibility due to the resentment he holds for his mother who replaced herself with a nanny Hobson. His ways of alcoholism brought him to a stop with the law, leading to his mother to give him an unpredictable ultimatum following the embarrassments Arthur causes.
He then meets a free spirited Naomi who knows nothing of such a comfortable lifestyle, and has to work for all she gets. Her opposite characteristics and determination, sway Arthur, leading him to question himself and his world- what is more important: love, or his mother’s money.
Rating: 6 out of 10
The film was reasonably good, with comedic timing and truly laugh out loud moments with heart wrenching times as well. It also shows serious aspects with alcohol problems, that are played to a believable level due to Brands previous first hand experiences. I would recommend this film for the overall experience, because of mixing laughable key points with tear filled ones also. A large demographic would suit for a nice night in something easy to watch on a sunday night in, and please most members of the household.

I am number four review:
Cert(uk): 12A
Runtime: 109minutes
Directors: D J Caruso
Cast: Alex Pettyfer, Callan McAuliffe, Dianna Agron, Jake Abel, Teresa Palmer, Timothy Olyphant, Timothy Olyphant
Actors: Alex pettyfer plays yet another teenage heart throb role he plays this well although the character seems monotonous just another boy meets girl although this time it has a twist, he is an alien (sounds a bit roswell-ish, i know). Glee’s Dianna Agron plays that misunderstood girl who try’s to get out of her dull town, i cant help but think she didnt bring a lot to this role it felt as if something was missing throughout the movie. Oh yeah half way through the movie comes a rebel girl who helps our leading man out played by Teresa Palmer i did like her character she brought a bit of umph to the movie although i hated the accent and didnt think it was the best. All in all the acting was done well although seemed slow paced at times.
background: The movie is from a book with the same title - I Am Number Four its a young adult science fiction novel by Pittacus Lore
Plott: The movie is set in modern day, where a group of 9 aliens fled there home planet to live on earth because they are threatend and one day will fight for there salvation during all this the enemies mortars pick the 9 off one by one until number four. Our leading man john trys to avoid his ruthless enemies by staying on the run, we see him flee his sunny party town for a dull ohio and told to stay out of sight and just blend in by his protector (henri).
But in the midst of trying to blend in he comes across a strange girl he feels immediately drawn to, this then changes his life completely due to meeting his first ever love. While all this happens he discovers his heritage of his powers, and becomes friends with a unpopular boy who always knew the truth about aliens.
The story then reaches its climax with the mortars trying to reach number 4, while number 4 knows he must find the other 5 aliens in order to protect his race and become stronger.
Rating: 4 out of 10
The film was very good visually at fight sequences but it seemed as if the sci-fi theme was took over by the romance aspect, it could of been done better i thought and should of gave more of a background to the characters, it seemed to lack details - as i have never read the book it seemed as if you had to be familiar with them to understand and get a better overall feel of what was going on due to the rushed nature of the film. I would say target audience would be teenage girls, but would be an okay choose for a family sit down.

Water for elephants review:
cert(uk): 12A
Runtime: 122minutes
Directors: Francis Lawrence
Main cast: Christoph Waltz, Hal Holbrook, Paul Schneider, Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson
Background: The movie is based from the 2006 bestseller by Sara Gruen.
Actors: Twilights star Robert pattinson emerges to play an awkward polish man who has lost everything his portrayal of this is both intelligent and believable although pattinson does know how to play that heart throb. Although this is not just another teen movie that get girls flocking to see it. Reese Witherspoon eye fluttering beauty brings both believability and drama to the role, she paces the plott and seems to sparkle in the high tension moments and control the scene well. Christoph waltz embodies the wickedness and anger playing august although shows vulnerability through the hard exterior.
Plott: Set in America during the great depression while following a struggling circus find its feet again through their new star rosie the bull elephant.
After his parents death Jacob Jankoski is left without a home and a penny to call his own, with this the heart renching story jacob leaves the life he has always known, trying to find a city by following the rail rodes he jumps an unknown train that will leads him to Augusts circus where he uses his knowladge in vetenary science to get a job.
Soon after meeting with the circus the young awkward Jacob learns about true mens suffering during the great depression watching men go without pay or even killed. Augusts Character is a strong force and has a possesive nature making jacob act cautiouse for he holds a soft spot for Marlena, although Jacob and Marlena find each other and fall in love after being brought together by the love the elephant they train.
Rating: 5 out of 10
although i think this was a good story and well played out with its beautifull and artistic cinematography, it could be a hit or miss by many and does seem to try and hit a teenage girl audience with pattinsons character however older female audiences would enjoy also- i would reccomend a mother daughter film. Although the plott is much more complex but gives a lighter unique spin for a movie set in the great depression
Being as its a new start to the blog i will start of with mainstream movies to get back in the hang of things tomorrow i will either do, i am number four, harry potter, water for elephants, red riding hood, or blackswan
